(Sold) Deacon - $3,500
Deacon is a black 8 yo grade gelding standing about 14.1hh, the perfect large pony/small horse. Green broke with about 20 rides, has a complete puppy dog personality. Not spooky, hardly anything phases him. Mostly trail ridden with some arena work here and there. Lunges pretty well, picks up both leads. An awesome project for a youth or amateur rider to finish out with a bit of help from a trainer. Leads, loads, ties, bathes, stands for vet/farrier, gets along with mares and geldings, lower in the pecking order. Previous owner hacked off his mane and forelock, but it’s coming back in faster and thicker than you could ever want.
I was really excited about this guy initially, he’s going to make a fabulous trail, pleasure, or family horse someday. Has a personality to die for. However, Deacon also has the work ethic of a 35lb house cat. I mean this horse takes laid back to a whole new level. Friends outwalking him on the trail, leaving us in the dust? Don’t care. Turkey flies up and smacks you between the eyes? Whatever. Deacon’s only aim is to mosey through life with minimal input. When I said this is one lazy, carefree horse, I really mean it. This horse would make an awesome pleasure, trail, lesson horse, or youth prospect.
UTD on shots, Coggins, teeth, and feet. Easy keeper, fine barefoot but is currently shod all around as I’ve been ponying him behind a jog cart up and down the roads in hopes one day I’ll get around to breaking him to drive. Located in St. Charles, Iowa. Asking $3,500 obo.
Though Deacon is quiet and good minded, he is still only has a few rides. This horse is NOT finished. He kinda stops, steers, and goes, but mostly just meanders around. I’ve never tried trotting in the arena, never loped him under saddle. We’ve trotted down the road and trail a few times, but still working on the basics.
Don’t have much history, someone picked him up at a sale then realized they were in over their heads. Still had his wolf teeth when I got him. We’ve shored up some holes in his training that we’ve found so far. Deacon hasn’t offered to do anything wrong, not the sharpest horse I’ve ever sat on but good natured. Loves people, attention, cuddles, and scratches. Does try to do the right thing, but definitely not the sharpest tool in the shed. Absolutely not catty or gritty, but does move pretty well and could be competitive in pleasure, hunter, or ranch classes with his deep step, flat stride and naturally low carriage. Doesn’t react to hot feed, fine with dogs, cats, traffic, wildlife, ATVs, kids running around, riding out alone, etc.
