We are the Deatons, a family of four who buy, breed, raise, train, and sell horses. Our favorite breeds are Morgans, Thoroughbreds, Connemaras, and Irish Sport Horses, with a great deal of overlap in their easy trainability, willingness, and charisma. We also love our draft crosses and grade horses for their gentle personalities, good humor, and willingness to take a joke. Though most of our time is spent trail riding, my husband, Jamie, my oldest son, Jay, and I (Christy) also enjoy taking lessons and attending clinics. Jay and I also go to shows and demos, and though Jay isn’t quite up to sorting or foxhunting yet, it will only be a matter of time before he’s chasing cows or hounds with me, too!
I’ve always had horses, growing up riding pleasure and hunter jumpers on my Morgan before switching to eventing with my Thoroughbred. I still enjoy foxhunting and schooling shows, but have recently been taking advantage of the many cowhorse and ranch horse classes and clinics offered in the area.
From the beginning, colt starting and “problem horses” have always been my forte - mostly because I couldn’t afford to be picky when opportunity knocked. Such challenges kept me on my toes, and working hard to learn more about how to get down to and address the root cause of an issue.
