Flyhawk Dude

Flyhawk Dude is a 14.3hh black stallion born and raised in Canada, before Susan Motter of Prairie Hill Morgans brought him to the states in 2013. 100% foundation, Dude is stylish, balanced & sturdy classical style Morgan stallion, siring athletic, correct, and typy individuals that are developing into outstanding performance prospects. He represents a rare blend of treasured, old versatile Morgan bloodlines including: Moro Hill Gay Ethan, Flyhawk, Dapper Dan, Jubilee's Flash, Honor, Linsley.

After getting a mare we decided we “just HAD to breed”, I began really looking into the cost of AI from an outside stallion. Being as the mare was a maiden, I grew increasingly concerned about trying AI, but the nearest live cover I could find was clear out in north western Nebraska.

Finally, I got around to the point of considering getting our own stallion. Now, while I hadn’t owned a stallion, I’d been around enough to know exactly what I wanted: a horse who knew how to pasture breed (you’d think nature would just “kick in” but I promise you - that’s really not the case) and something OLD - maybe just a little arthritic, maybe missing a few teeth, but not dead yet. Something that’s past the age of needing to prove himself, something that’s happy to stay in fences and not lose it at the mere sight of a gelding (or dog, deer, etc. for that matter).

So, I combed the internet. There were a couple here and there that I stumbled across, but nothing that ended up working out. We came extremely close to getting an older OGO stallion - but even the breeder struggled to make contact with the current owner after a time. We came to learn later that the horse was sold out from under us. However, my many conversations with the lovely Wendy LeGate of OGO Morgans had me thinking that maybe there were other breeders out there who’d be willing to help us out as much as Wendy did. So, I began the modern version of cold calling people all over the US - specifically, people who were breeding “my kind” of horses. Though still mostly clueless about Morgan bloodlines, I knew I would be safe with anything these breeders felt met their standards.

I started by asking around to see if anyone had some older fella, balls intact, that maybe was too closely related to too many mares now, or some senior that would soon be phased out as a junior stallion reached breeding age. For the most part, I was able to meet some really neat people, who were incredibly generous about making introductions on my behalf, giving me other leads, and also asking around to see if anyone might have what I was looking for.

Eventually, I was able to connect with Susan Motter of Prairie Hill Morgans. Well, Susan had 5 stallions at the time, including this 22 year old who she hadn’t bred in several years. Dude wasn’t really for sale - he’d done his job well and had earned an easy retirement with someone who loved him. However, Susan didn’t really need Dude, and heck, maybe the old guy would appreciate getting back in the game. Susan made us an incredible deal on her little black stallion, and let me tell you, I honestly still don’t believe how perfect of a fit Dude has become.

I could probably fill a whole book with the stupid things this little guy allows us to get away with. When picking him up, we met at a truck stop, unloaded a strange mare, unloaded and reloaded Dude, and put the mare back on the trailer with him without a single issue. This alone told me what kind of expectations Susan had for her horses, with or without testicles, which is absolutely a defining trait of her program.

Dude lets my mom lead him with an “invisible halter” or a lead rope around the neck - within sight of mares, geldings, and his broodmares - from one pasture to another at feeding time. A gentleman for the farrier, and the one you throw on the trailer to keep an antsy broodmare quiet at the vet; no, really, we’ve had to bring in the stallion to settle down the mare.

Though never broke to ride, Dude has one of the best dispositions you could ask for in a Morgan. One of the last foals by Barebeejays Deseo and one of only two horses out of Dancing Dixey - the other, a full sister by the name of Ebony Echo, was owned by Susan Motter and is the dam of Prairie Hill Armani, one of Susan’s splash stallions.

Dude hasn’t sired many foal, but the offspring he does have are lovely, correct Morgans. Some of them are listed below.
