Bermeja Secora LR
We purchase Secora, a 2005 mare, in 2021 after seeing a post from her breeder, Shery Jespersen, saying Secora’s owner was putting her up for sale. Well, I called my mom right away, there was no chance we were letting a Jazzspur baby slip through our fingers! Originally, we did not buy Secora with the intent to breed her, but with so few of Jazz’s babies still of breeding age, we decided we needed at least one colt from Secora.
AFS Heavenly Hi Note
Hi Note is a 2010 mare who came from another dear old friend in Wyoming who bred plenty of nice big using horses. We found Hi Note by tracing down progeny from Triton Dallas, who was known for his excellent disposition, correct conformation, and cow sense. Even better, Triton Dallas coming down through Jazzspur, whom Hi Note is almost a spitting image of! She carries that classic Apple Pi conformation enlarged to 16 hands. Also has a bit of that chestnut Apple Pi mare attitude, she’s a queen and knows it! She’s quickly formed a bond with my dad (who just so happens to like bigger horses).
Doves Faith
Faith is the last horse owned by Jeanette Dove, who was well known in the Midwest for her support of the Morgan breed, youth events, and local shows. Jeanette could be counted on for a few words of encouragement or to lend some missing piece of tack forgotten at home. The Dove’s stood the Midwestern legend, Prince Cobra, who sired many competitive sport and family horses.
Faith, a 2002 model, was given to Shery Jespersen when Jeanette’s health went into rapid decline. Of all the horses the Doves bred, Jeanette chose Faith to keep as the perfect “Old Lady’s Horse”. Unfortunately, Faith is no longer 100% sound but we hope to continue Jeanette’s legacy with this gentle, kindhearted mare.
Epona
Epona is a 17 hh draft cross mare we purchased in January 2021 for my husband. Her Belgian traits are evident in her gentle and calm manner, making her the perfect trail horse for our family and a favorite among campers at my mom’s non-profit organization. Epona will take care of even the most timid riders, and is quite happy to meander around the ring as well.
Though only half-draft, she is still draft-sized, with dinner-plate hooves and weighing in at about 1500 lbs, making her too big for the draft cross market. However, it makes her perfect to cross again to produce that perfect size. We’ve had a great deal of luck in the draft cross market and look forward to producing colts with a combination of Morgan charisma with the gentle nature of Belgians.
We plan to register Epona’s colts as part-Morgan through the Canadian Morgan Horse Association, with the possibility of also registering them with the American Warmblood Society and color breed registries.
We are always looking for quality Morgan and draft mares to add to our program. If you have a mare you’d be willing to part with (even for a lease!) that you think could be a good fit, please reach out!
We are focused primarily on sport horse and western working Morgans, the wider the better! Our hope is to take our colts into a variety of disciplines, increasing awareness through sports such as reined cowhorse, ranch versatility, eventing, trail, and foxhunting.
Not every Morgan is cut out for a first time owner, timid rider, or lesson program. While there are some incredible exceptions, most Morgans enjoy a partnership with one person who appreciates their intelligence and wit. For those looking for something a bit more laid back, a bit less athletic, or a bit less likely to figure out how to open every gate on your place, we think draft crosses are a pretty great option. At this time, we are actively look for Percheron broodmares, as they remain our top choice for a cross; however, we are also interested in adding other draft mares down the road.
